Yes, it’s 100% legal for Employers to pull your credit. Not only when they are looking to hire you, but at any time during your employment as well. They’re not looking at credit scores per say, but more for the existence of Collections, Judgments, and Debt. There are two reasons why this is happening. #1, so they can filter incredible large pools of job applicants down further and #2, so the Employer can assess how big of a risk and employee might be for stealing products/equipment or selling valuable information about the Company.
Is this going too far? You can certainly make an argument for that. Especially if you know how inaccurate these credit reports are in a lot of cases. However, I think it’s crazy for an Employer not to pull a Credit report for a potential employee. You can learn a lot, assuming is accurate
The BIG TIP here is to be proactive. If you’re submitting a resume, make sure you submit your credit report as well. This will make you stick out and get you in the pile of people to be interviewed. If your credit has challenges, then what are you waiting for? Let’s get it fixed right away!
Email me any experiences or stories you might have about this subject. I’d love to hear from you. Have a good one!
